The famous dictionary of Samuel Johnson, published in London in 1755; its principles dominated English __oceanography/lexicography/zoogeography/seismography__ for more than a century. This two-volume work surpassed earlier dictionaries not in bulk but in the __extension/outreach/precision/amplification__ of definition. Its strength lay in two features: the original carefully divided and ordered, elegantly formulated definitions of the main word stock of the language; and the __copious/huge/galactic/robust__ citation of quotations from the entire range of English literature, which served in support and illustration and which __testified/exemplified/rectified/justified__ the different shades of meaning of a particular word. A Dictionary of the English Language included a history of the language, a grammar, and an extensive list of words representing basic general vocabulary, based on the best conversation of __normal/common/usual/contemporary__ London and the normal usage of __famous/respected/modern/esteem__ writers. The original was followed in 1756 by an abbreviated one-volume version that was widely used far into the 20th century. Johnson’s __accomplishment/performance/fulfillment/implementation__ was to provide for the English language a dictionary that incorporated with skill and intellectual power the ideals and resources and the best __measurable/considerable/available/determinable__ techniques of European lexicography. It was the standard English dictionary until Noah Webster’s.

The essential problem, as Rosenfeld sees it, is that __monarchical/aristocratic/democratic/communist__ government is predicated on an aspiration to collective truth. Unlike older systems of aristocratic and monarchical rule, which excluded the people from power and stressed the need for administrative secrecy, the new republics of the late 18th century, and the more egalitarian mass democracies that __inherited/succeeded/benefited/protected__ them, depended on openness and trust between citizens and rulers. Through the free discussion and united wisdom of the educated and the masses, errors would be dispelled, ‘public knowledge’ established and societies advanced. And yet, she points out, the reality has never __lived up to/resulted in/compared to/prevented from__ this powerful ideal. From the outset, democratic societies contained vast inequalities of power and education, and their media have always been driven by commercial and partisan imperatives. __To be honest/Consequently/In contrast/In practice__ , instead of a free civil marketplace of ideas, politics has always been a vicious fight over the truth and the power of determining it.

The electrons that orbit closest to the nucleus are strongly __absorbed/attracted/repelled/adopted__. They are called bound electrons. The electrons that are farther away from the pull of nucleus can be forced out of their __trajectories/patterns/rotations/orbits__. These are called free electrons. Free electrons can __move/carry/drift/jump__ from one atom to another. This movement is known as electron __stream/flux/flow/current__. Electricity is the movement or flow of electrons from one atom to another. A condition of imbalance is necessary to have a movement of electrons. In a normal atom, the positively charged nucleus balances the negatively charged electrons. This holds them in __orbit/circle/line/flow__. If an atom loses electrons, it becomes positive in charge. It attracts more electrons in order to get its __positive/balance/strong/power__.
A conductor is any material that allows a good electron flow and conducts electricity. A good conductor must be made of atoms that give off free electrons easily. Also, the atoms must be close enough to each other so that the free electron orbits overlap. __Modern/Combustion/Ignition/Electronic__ systems use copper and aluminium wires to conduct electricity. They allow good electron flow.
