-
- “o”: hot /hɒt/, got /ɡɒt/, clock /klɒk/, box /bɒks/, stop /stɒp/
- “wa”: watch /wɒtʃ/, want /wɒnt/
- “au”: sausage /ˈsɒsɪdʒ/
- “ough/ou“: cough /kɒf/, trough /trɒf/
- “qua”: quality /ˈkwɒləti/, quantity /ˈkwɒntəti/, squash /skwɒʃ/
- Một số cách viết khác: knowledge /ˈnɒlɪdʒ/, because /bɪˈkɒz/
Mặt chữ chỉ giúp dự đoán cách đọc. Ví dụ, o tạo ra /ɒ/ trong hot nhưng tạo ra /əʊ/ trong home. Vì vậy, bạn vẫn nên kiểm tra phiên âm khi gặp từ mới.
4. Một vài lưu ý quan trọng về âm /ɒ/
1. Không kéo dài /ɒ/
/ɒ/ là nguyên âm ngắn. Khi đọc hot hoặc clock, hãy phát âm gọn thay vì giữ âm quá lâu.
Bạn có thể luyện chậm:
/ɒ/ → hot /hɒt/ → a hot day
Khi đã quen, hãy đọc cả cụm từ với tốc độ tự nhiên mà vẫn giữ nguyên âm rõ ràng.
So sánh:
- hot /hɒt/ – hut /hʌt/
- not /nɒt/ – nut /nʌt/
- lock /lɒk/ – luck /lʌk/

How to Pronounce the /ɒ/ Sound Correctly and Easily
The /ɒ/ sound appears in many familiar words such as hot, clock, watch, and doctor. However, Vietnamese learners often make several common mistakes:
First, they lengthen /ɒ/, making it sound closer to /ɔː/.
Second, they fail to round their lips, which can make the sound closer to /ɑː/.
Third, they confuse /ɒ/ with /ʌ/ because both are short vowels.
In PTE Speaking, clear vowel pronunciation helps listeners recognize words more easily.
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Position your tongue, open your mouth, and round your lips to produce /ɒ/.
- Recognize common spellings that can represent the /ɒ/ sound.
- Practice listening to and pronouncing /ɒ/ on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /ɒ/ Sound
The /ɒ/ sound is a short, monophthongal, voiced vowel in the British English phonemic system.
2. How to Produce the /ɒ/ Sound
You can practice producing /ɒ/ in three steps:
- Step 1: Lower your jaw so that your mouth is fairly open while keeping your facial muscles relaxed.
- Step 2: Keep your tongue low and slightly retracted toward the back of your mouth.
- Step 3: Round your lips slightly and produce a short, clear sound. Do not lengthen it.
Try saying:
/ɒ/ – /ɒ/ – /ɒ/
Then, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s specialist teachers to observe the mouth opening and lip shape used to produce /ɒ/.
3. Recognizing the /ɒ/ Sound from Spelling
The /ɒ/ sound can appear at the beginning of a word, as in on /ɒn/, or in words such as coffee /ˈkɒfi/ and doctor /ˈdɒktə(r)/.
The /ɒ/ sound does not occur at the end of a stressed syllable. It must be followed by a consonant. This is a general characteristic of the six short vowels: /ɪ/, /e/, /æ/, /ɒ/, /ʌ/, and /ʊ/.
Common spellings include:
- “o”: hot /hɒt/, got /ɡɒt/, clock /klɒk/, box /bɒks/, stop /stɒp/
- “wa”: watch /wɒtʃ/, want /wɒnt/
- “au”: sausage /ˈsɒsɪdʒ/
- “ough/ou”: cough /kɒf/, trough /trɒf/
- “qua”: quality /ˈkwɒləti/, quantity /ˈkwɒntəti/, squash /skwɒʃ/
- Other spellings: knowledge /ˈnɒlɪdʒ/, because /bɪˈkɒz/
Spelling can only help you predict pronunciation. For example, o represents /ɒ/ in hot but /əʊ/ in home. Therefore, you should still check the phonemic transcription when you encounter a new word.
4. Important Notes About the /ɒ/ Sound
1. Do Not Lengthen /ɒ/
/ɒ/ is a short vowel. When saying hot or clock, keep the sound short and clear rather than holding it for too long.
You can practice slowly:
/ɒ/ → hot /hɒt/ → a hot day
Once you become more comfortable, say the whole phrase at a natural speed while keeping the vowel clear.
2. Distinguishing /ɒ/ from /ɔː/
/ɒ/ is shorter and is produced with a more open mouth. /ɔː/ is generally longer and is produced with a somewhat more rounded and less open mouth position.
Practice these pairs:
- cot /kɒt/ – caught /kɔːt/
- pot /pɒt/ – port /pɔːt/
- shot /ʃɒt/ – short /ʃɔːt/
If cot sounds too similar to caught, check whether you are holding the vowel too long or rounding your lips too much.
3. Distinguishing /ɒ/ from /ʌ/
Both are short vowels, but they differ in three main ways:
- Jaw opening: /ɒ/ is produced with a more open jaw than /ʌ/.
- Tongue position: For /ɒ/, the tongue is low and retracted toward the back; for /ʌ/, the tongue is positioned more centrally.
- Lips: /ɒ/ involves slight lip rounding, while /ʌ/ is produced with relatively neutral lips.
Compare:
- hot /hɒt/ – hut /hʌt/
- not /nɒt/ – nut /nʌt/
- lock /lɒk/ – luck /lʌk/
Try practicing in front of a mirror. If your lips barely change between the two words in each pair, you may be overlooking the slight lip rounding required for /ɒ/.
4. Pronunciation Can Vary by Accent
This article uses Oxford’s UK pronunciation system. Oxford gives got as /ɡɒt/ in British English, while the corresponding pronunciation in American English is commonly /ɡɑːt/.
As a result, you may hear the same word pronounced with a different vowel when the speaker uses a different accent.
When practicing with this article, prioritize the UK pronunciation and remain consistent throughout your exercises.
5. Practice the /ɒ/ Sound on PTEUNI
To improve your /ɒ/ pronunciation, combine listening practice with speaking practice.
In Identify the Sound, practice recognizing /ɒ/ in words with different spellings. Then, try distinguishing between:
- cot – caught
- hot – hut
- pot – port
Once you can identify the sound more accurately, move on to Practice the Sound. Listen to the model pronunciation, record yourself, and check your jaw opening, tongue position, and lip shape.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practice Again
If you are a PTE Helper student, go to PTEUNI → Skill Booster and practice the /ɒ/ sound with Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound:
Regular practice will help you produce /ɒ/ more clearly and distinguish it more effectively from /ɔː/ and /ʌ/. PTE Helper will continue to support you in building a strong pronunciation foundation and preparing for the Speaking section of the PTE.
