3. Nhận diện âm /ɔː/ qua mặt chữ
Âm /ɔː/ có thể xuất hiện ở đầu từ như autumn /ˈɔːtəm/, giữa từ như water /ˈwɔːtə(r)/ hoặc cuối từ như law /lɔː/.
Những cách viết thường gặp gồm:
- “or”: short /ʃɔːt/, sport /spɔːt/
- “ore”: more /mɔː(r)/
- “oor”: door /dɔː(r)/
- “aw”: saw /sɔː/, law /lɔː/, draw /drɔː/
- “au”: autumn /ˈɔːtəm/, caught /kɔːt/
- “al”: all /ɔːl/, talk /tɔːk/, walk /wɔːk/
- “ough”: thought /θɔːt/, bought /bɔːt/
So sánh:
- saw /sɔː/ – so /səʊ/
- law /lɔː/ – low /ləʊ/
- port /pɔːt/ – post /pəʊst/
- caught – cot
- saw – so
- short – shot

How to Pronounce /ɔː/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /ɔː/ sound appears in many familiar words such as saw, door, short, and water. However, Vietnamese learners often make several common mistakes:
First, they pronounce /ɔː/ too briefly, making it sound closer to /ɒ/.
Second, they open their mouths too widely and fail to round their lips, which can make the sound less clear.
Third, they confuse /ɔː/ with /əʊ/, especially in pairs such as saw – so.
In PTE Speaking, clear vowel pronunciation helps listeners recognize words more easily.
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Position your tongue, round your lips, and hold /ɔː/ for an appropriate length of time.
- Recognize the spelling patterns that can represent /ɔː/.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /ɔː/ on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /ɔː/ Sound
The /ɔː/ sound is a long, voiced monophthong. The /ː/ symbol indicates that the vowel is held for a relatively longer duration.
2. How to Produce the /ɔː/ Sound
You can practise /ɔː/ in three steps:
- Step 1: Open your mouth moderately and lower your jaw comfortably.
- Step 2: Move the body of your tongue slightly backward and round your lips. Do not purse your lips too tightly.
- Step 3: Keep your vocal cords vibrating and produce /ɔː/ with a relatively long, steady quality. Do not change the mouth position into another sound at the end.
Try saying:
/ɔː/ – /ɔː/ – /ɔː/
Then, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s expert teachers to see the lip position and mouth opening more clearly when producing /ɔː/.
3. Recognizing /ɔː/ from Spelling Patterns
The /ɔː/ sound can appear at the beginning of a word, as in autumn /ˈɔːtəm/, in the middle, as in water /ˈwɔːtə(r)/, or at the end, as in law /lɔː/.
Common spelling patterns include:
- “or”: short /ʃɔːt/, sport /spɔːt/
- “ore”: more /mɔː(r)/
- “oor”: door /dɔː(r)/
- “aw”: saw /sɔː/, law /lɔː/, draw /drɔː/
- “au”: autumn /ˈɔːtəm/, caught /kɔːt/
- “al”: all /ɔːl/, talk /tɔːk/, walk /wɔːk/
- “ough”: thought /θɔːt/, bought /bɔːt/
Spelling patterns can only help you predict pronunciation. For example, “or” represents /ɔː/ in short but a different sound in word. When you encounter a new word, you should still check its Oxford English pronunciation rather than relying on its spelling.
4. Important Points to Remember About /ɔː/
1. Distinguishing /ɔː/ from /ɒ/
/ɔː/ is longer, and the mouth is generally less open than for /ɒ/.
Practise these pairs:
- caught /kɔːt/ – cot /kɒt/
- port /pɔːt/ – pot /pɒt/
- short /ʃɔːt/ – shot /ʃɒt/
If caught sounds too similar to cot, check the length of the vowel and make sure you maintain rounded lips throughout the sound.
2. Distinguishing /ɔː/ from /əʊ/
The /ɔː/ sound is produced relatively steadily. In contrast, /əʊ/ involves movement of the tongue and lips during pronunciation.
Compare:
- saw /sɔː/ – so /səʊ/
- law /lɔː/ – low /ləʊ/
- port /pɔːt/ – post /pəʊst/
3. Understanding the (r) Notation in UK Pronunciation
Oxford gives the pronunciation of door as /dɔː(r)/ and more as /mɔː(r)/. In standard British pronunciation, (r) indicates that /r/ is normally not pronounced when the word is spoken in isolation or before a consonant, but it may be pronounced to link the word to a following vowel.
Therefore, when transcribing Oxford pronunciation, keep the (r) notation as shown.
For words such as short /ʃɔːt/ or sport /spɔːt/, Oxford does not include (r) after the vowel because the r in the spelling is followed by another consonant within the word.
5. Practising the /ɔː/ Sound on PTEUNI
To improve your /ɔː/ pronunciation, combine listening and speaking practice.
In Identify the Sound, practise recognizing /ɔː/ across different spelling patterns. Then, try distinguishing:
- caught – cot
- saw – so
- short – shot
Once you can identify the sound more confidently, move on to Practice the Sound to listen to the model pronunciation, produce the sound yourself, and check its duration, tongue position, and lip shape.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again
If you are a PTE Helper student, you can access PTEUNI → Skill Booster and practise /ɔː/ with Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound:
PTE Helper will continue to support you as you build a strong pronunciation foundation and prepare for the Speaking section of the PTE.
