- Chữ “u”: up /ʌp/, under /ˈʌndə(r)/, cup /kʌp/, sun /sʌn/, study /ˈstʌdi/
- Chữ “o”: come /kʌm/, love /lʌv/, money /ˈmʌni/, mother /ˈmʌðə(r)/
- Cụm “ou”: young /jʌŋ/, country /ˈkʌntri/, couple /ˈkʌpl/, trouble /ˈtrʌbl/
- Cụm “oo”: blood /blʌd/, flood /flʌd/
- Cụm “ough”: enough /ɪˈnʌf/, tough /tʌf/, rough /rʌf/
- Một số cách viết đặc biệt: does /dʌz/
Âm /ʌ/ thường xuất hiện ở đầu từ hoặc giữa từ:
- Đầu từ: up, under, uncle
- Giữa từ: cup, money, country, enough
Âm này không đứng cuối trong các từ tiếng Anh thông dụng.
4. Một vài lưu ý quan trọng về âm /ʌ/
1. Phân biệt /ʌ/ và /ʊ/
/ʌ/ không tròn môi, trong khi /ʊ/ thường được tạo với môi tròn nhẹ và lưỡi ở vị trí cao hơn.
Hãy luyện các cặp:
- luck /lʌk/ – look /lʊk/
- putt /pʌt/ – put /pʊt/
- cud /kʌd/ – could /kʊd/
Khi phát âm /ʌ/, đừng chu môi chỉ vì từ có chữ u.
2. Phân biệt /ʌ/ và /æ/
/æ/ có vị trí lưỡi hướng ra phía trước và độ mở miệng lớn hơn /ʌ/.
Hãy luyện:
- cup /kʌp/ – cap /kæp/
- cut /kʌt/ – cat /kæt/
- run /rʌn/ – ran /ræn/
- much /mʌtʃ/ – match /mætʃ/
Nếu mở miệng quá rộng hoặc đưa lưỡi quá xa về phía trước, /ʌ/ có thể nghe gần thành /æ/.
/ʌ/ → cup → cup/cap → one cup → My mother wants another cup.

How to Pronounce /ʌ/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /ʌ/ sound appears in many familiar words such as up, cup, love, and money. However, Vietnamese learners often make three common mistakes:
First, pronouncing /ʌ/ exactly like the Vietnamese vowel “â” or “ă”. This substitution can make the sound less natural in English.
Second, confusing /ʌ/ with /ʊ/. If the lips are rounded or the tongue is positioned too high, luck /lʌk/ may sound similar to look /lʊk/.
Third, confusing /ʌ/ with /ə/. These two sounds are produced in relatively similar areas of the mouth, but /ʌ/ typically occurs in stressed syllables, while /ə/ mainly occurs in unstressed syllables.
This article will help you practise /ʌ/ in three main ways:
- Understand how to adjust your jaw, tongue, and lips to produce /ʌ/.
- Recognise the common spelling patterns that represent the /ʌ/ sound.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /ʌ/ through exercises in Skill Booster on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /ʌ/ Sound
/ʌ/ is a short, monophthongal, voiced vowel sound.
2. How to Produce the /ʌ/ Sound
You can practise producing /ʌ/ by following these steps:
- Step 1: Lower your jaw moderately and let your mouth open naturally.
- Step 2: Keep your tongue relaxed in the central area of the mouth.
- Step 3: Keep your lips in a neutral position. Do not purse or round them.
- Step 4: Produce the sound briefly, clearly, and steadily. Do not lengthen it or change your mouth position halfway through.
Try saying:
/ʌ/ – /ʌ/ – /ʌ/
Then practise with:
up /ʌp/ – cup /kʌp/ – love /lʌv/ – young /jʌŋ/
Next, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s expert teachers to clearly observe the jaw opening, tongue position, and lip shape used to produce /ʌ/.
3. Recognising the /ʌ/ Sound from Spelling
The /ʌ/ sound can be represented by several different spelling patterns:
- The letter “u”: up /ʌp/, under /ˈʌndə(r)/, cup /kʌp/, sun /sʌn/, study /ˈstʌdi/
- The letter “o”: come /kʌm/, love /lʌv/, money /ˈmʌni/, mother /ˈmʌðə(r)/
- The spelling “ou”: young /jʌŋ/, country /ˈkʌntri/, couple /ˈkʌpl/, trouble /ˈtrʌbl/
- The spelling “oo”: blood /blʌd/, flood /flʌd/
- The spelling “ough”: enough /ɪˈnʌf/, tough /tʌf/, rough /rʌf/
- Some less predictable spellings: does /dʌz/
The /ʌ/ sound commonly occurs at the beginning or in the middle of a word:
- At the beginning: up, under, uncle
- In the middle: cup, money, country, enough
This sound does not normally occur at the end of common English words.
4. Important Notes About the /ʌ/ Sound
1. Distinguishing /ʌ/ from /ʊ/
/ʌ/ is produced without lip rounding, while /ʊ/ is usually produced with slight lip rounding and a higher tongue position.
Practise these pairs:
- luck /lʌk/ – look /lʊk/
- putt /pʌt/ – put /pʊt/
- cud /kʌd/ – could /kʊd/
When producing /ʌ/, avoid rounding your lips simply because the word contains the letter u.
2. Distinguishing /ʌ/ from /æ/
/æ/ is produced with the tongue positioned further forward and with a greater degree of mouth opening than /ʌ/.
Practise these pairs:
- cup /kʌp/ – cap /kæp/
- cut /kʌt/ – cat /kæt/
- run /rʌn/ – ran /ræn/
- much /mʌtʃ/ – match /mætʃ/
If you open your mouth too widely or move your tongue too far forward, /ʌ/ may sound closer to /æ/.
3. Distinguishing /ʌ/ from /ə/
/ʌ/ and /ə/ can both be produced in the central area of the mouth, but they have different functions:
- /ʌ/ usually occurs in a stressed syllable.
- /ə/ usually occurs in an unstressed syllable and is pronounced more weakly.
The word above is an easy example to remember:
above /əˈbʌv/
- The first syllable is unstressed, so it contains /ə/.
- The second syllable is stressed, so it contains /ʌ/.
Oxford also gives the UK pronunciation of above as /əˈbʌv/.
4. Do Not Predict /ʌ/ Based on Spelling Alone
The letter u is not always pronounced as /ʌ/:
- cup /kʌp/
- put /pʊt/
- use /juːz/
Similarly, the spelling oo represents /ʌ/ in blood /blʌd/, but /uː/ in moon /muːn/ and /ʊ/ in book /bʊk/.
Therefore, spelling patterns can only help you make a prediction. When learning a new word, you should still check its IPA transcription and listen to a reliable audio recording.
5. Practising the /ʌ/ Sound on PTEUNI
To use /ʌ/ naturally, you need to combine listening practice with pronunciation and mouth-position practice.
In Skill Booster on PTEUNI, the Identify the Sound activity helps you recognise /ʌ/ in words and different positions. Then, Practice the Sound allows you to listen to a model and practise producing the sound yourself.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Individual sound → Single word → Minimal pair → Phrase → Complete sentence
For example:
/ʌ/ → cup → cup/cap → one cup → My mother wants another cup.
After each practice round, check yourself:
- Am I rounding my lips and making /ʌ/ sound more like /ʊ/?
- Am I opening my mouth too widely and making the sound closer to /æ/?
- Am I pronouncing /ʌ/ too weakly and turning it into /ə/?
- Is the /ʌ/ sound clear enough in the stressed syllable?
The sequence Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again can help you improve both your ability to distinguish the sound by ear and your control of the correct mouth position.
PTE Helper students can access PTEUNI, go to Skill Booster, and practise the /ʌ/ sound with the Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound activities: https://www.pteuni.com/
Regular practice will help you distinguish words such as luck – look and cup – cap more clearly and produce /ʌ/ more naturally when speaking. PTE Helper will continue to support you in building a strong pronunciation foundation and preparing for the Speaking section of the PTE.
