- “s”: measure /ˈmeʒə(r)/, pleasure /ˈpleʒə(r)/, treasure /ˈtreʒə(r)/
- “si”: vision /ˈvɪʒn/, decision /dɪˈsɪʒn/
- “su”: usual /ˈjuːʒuəl/
- “z”: seizure /ˈsiːʒə(r)/
- “ge”: beige /beɪʒ/, massage /ˈmæsɑːʒ/
- user /ˈjuːzə(r)/
- usual /ˈjuːʒuəl/
/ʒ/ → beige /beɪʒ/ → a beige coat

How to Pronounce /ʒ/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /ʒ/ sound appears in words such as vision, measure, pleasure, and beige. It is a sound that Vietnamese learners often find difficult to pronounce correctly.
First, they fail to vibrate their vocal cords, making /ʒ/ sound more like /ʃ/.
Second, they block the airflow and then release it, making the sound more like /dʒ/.
Third, they rely on spelling and pronounce the sound as /z/, especially in words that do not contain the letter “g”.
In PTE Speaking, clear consonant pronunciation helps listeners recognize words more easily.
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Position your tongue, control the airflow, and vibrate your vocal cords to produce /ʒ/.
- Recognize spelling patterns that can represent /ʒ/.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /ʒ/ on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /ʒ/ Sound
The /ʒ/ sound is a voiced fricative consonant.
2. How to Produce the /ʒ/ Sound
You can practise /ʒ/ in three steps:
- Step 1: Raise the front part of your tongue toward the area just behind the upper alveolar ridge, without pressing your tongue firmly against it or completely blocking the airflow.
- Step 2: Bring your lips slightly forward and round them gently.
- Step 3: Push the air steadily through the narrow passage while vibrating your vocal cords. You can place your hand on your throat to feel the vibration.
Try saying:
/ʒ/ – /ʒ/ – /ʒ/
Then, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s expert teachers to clearly see the tongue position, lip shape, and airflow used to produce /ʒ/.
3. Recognizing /ʒ/ from Spelling Patterns
The /ʒ/ sound most commonly occurs in the middle of words, as in measure /ˈmeʒə(r)/ and decision /dɪˈsɪʒn/. It can also occur at the beginning of a word, as in genre /ˈʒɒnrə/, or at the end, as in beige /beɪʒ/.
Some spelling patterns to pay attention to include:
- “s”: measure /ˈmeʒə(r)/, pleasure /ˈpleʒə(r)/, treasure /ˈtreʒə(r)/
- “si”: vision /ˈvɪʒn/, decision /dɪˈsɪʒn/
- “su”: usual /ˈjuːʒuəl/
- “z”: seizure /ˈsiːʒə(r)/
- “ge”: beige /beɪʒ/, massage /ˈmæsɑːʒ/
Spelling alone is not enough to determine pronunciation. For example, the letter “s” represents /ʒ/ in measure but /z/ in user /ˈjuːzə(r)/.
4. Important Points to Remember About /ʒ/
1. Distinguishing /ʒ/ from /ʃ/
/ʒ/ and /ʃ/ are produced with very similar tongue positions. The key difference to check is that your vocal cords vibrate when producing /ʒ/ but do not vibrate when producing /ʃ/.
Say the following sounds in sequence:
- /ʃ/ in mission /ˈmɪʃn/ → /ʒ/ in vision /ˈvɪʒn/
- /ʃ/ in pressure /ˈpreʃə(r)/ → /ʒ/ in pleasure /ˈpleʒə(r)/
The words in these pairs also differ in other sounds, so when practising, focus specifically on the contrast between /ʃ/ and /ʒ/. Place your hand on your throat and check whether you can feel the vibration when producing /ʒ/.
2. Distinguishing /ʒ/ from /dʒ/
/ʒ/ begins with continuous friction. With /dʒ/, the airflow is briefly blocked before being released into the fricative portion of the sound.
Try holding /ʒ/ on its own:
/ʒʒʒ/
Then say beige /beɪʒ/ and measure /ˈmeʒə(r)/. If you hear a clear burst immediately before the fricative, relax your tongue and allow the airflow to pass through more continuously.
3. Distinguishing /ʒ/ from /z/
/z/ is also a voiced consonant, so both /z/ and /ʒ/ involve vocal-cord vibration. The main difference lies in the tongue position: when producing /ʒ/, the front of the tongue is positioned farther back, and the lips are usually slightly rounded.
Compare the bold sounds in:
- user /ˈjuːzə(r)/
- usual /ˈjuːʒuəl/
These words are not a minimal pair because they differ in more than one sound. However, they show that the letter “s” can correspond to either /z/ or /ʒ/, depending on the word.
4. Finish Clearly When /ʒ/ Occurs at the End of a Word
In beige /beɪʒ/ and massage /ˈmæsɑːʒ/, /ʒ/ is the final sound. Keep your vocal cords vibrating while producing the fricative, then stop; do not add a vowel afterward.
You can practise slowly:
/ʒ/ → beige /beɪʒ/ → a beige coat
When you record yourself and listen back, pay attention to whether beige ends immediately after /ʒ/.
5. Practising the /ʒ/ Sound on PTEUNI
To improve your /ʒ/ pronunciation, combine listening and speaking practice.
In Identify the Sound, practise recognizing /ʒ/ in words with different spelling patterns. Then, try distinguishing:
- /ʒ/ in vision and /ʃ/ in mission
- /ʒ/ in pleasure and /ʃ/ in pressure
- /ʒ/ in usual and /z/ in user
Once you can identify the sound more confidently, move on to Practice the Sound to listen to the model pronunciation, produce the sound yourself, and check your vocal-cord vibration and airflow.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again
If you are a PTE Helper student, you can access PTEUNI → Skill Booster and practise /ʒ/ with Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound: PTEUNI
PTE Helper will continue to support you as you build a strong pronunciation foundation and prepare for the Speaking section of the PTE.
