Cách Phát Âm /θ/ Đúng Và Dễ Nhớ Trong Tiếng Anh
Âm /θ/ xuất hiện trong nhiều từ quen thuộc như think, three, author, teeth. Tuy nhiên, người Việt thường mắc một số lỗi:
Thứ nhất, đọc /θ/ thành /t/, khiến three nghe gần giống tree.
- Đầu từ: think /θɪŋk/, three /θriː/, thick /θɪk/
- Giữa từ: author /ˈɔːθə(r)/, birthday /ˈbɜːθdeɪ/, healthy /ˈhelθi/
- three /θriː/ – tree /triː/
- thin /θɪn/ – tin /tɪn/
Nếu three nghe gần giống tree, hãy giữ đầu lưỡi gần răng cửa và để hơi đi ra ngay từ đầu, thay vì chặn hơi rồi bật mạnh.
2. Phân biệt /θ/ và /s/
/θ/ được tạo với đầu lưỡi ở gần răng cửa trên. Khi đọc /s/, lưỡi lùi vào trong hơn và không đặt giữa hai hàm răng.
So sánh:
- thin /θɪn/ – sin /sɪn/
- thick /θɪk/ – sick /sɪk/
Hãy soi gương khi luyện. Nếu đọc cả hai từ mà đầu lưỡi không thay đổi vị trí, bạn có thể đang đọc /θ/ thành /s/.
3. Phân biệt /θ/ và /ð/
/θ/ và /ð/ có vị trí lưỡi gần giống nhau. Điểm khác biệt quan trọng là /θ/ không làm rung dây thanh, còn /ð/ có rung dây thanh.
Hãy đặt tay lên cổ và đọc:
- thigh /θaɪ/ – thy /ðaɪ/
- teeth /tiːθ/ – teethe /tiːð/
Ở từ bên phải của mỗi cặp, bạn sẽ cảm nhận độ rung rõ hơn khi tạo âm /ð/.
4. Giữ /θ/ rõ khi âm đứng cuối từ
Trong bath /bɑːθ/ và teeth /tiːθ/, /θ/ là âm cuối. Sau khi đẩy hơi qua khe giữa lưỡi và răng, hãy kết thúc từ; không thay /θ/ bằng /t/ hoặc thêm một nguyên âm phía sau.
Bạn có thể luyện chậm:
/θ/ → teeth /tiːθ/ → my teeth
Hãy ghi âm và nghe lại phần cuối từ. Nếu teeth kết thúc bằng một tiếng bật ngắn, bạn có thể đang đọc /t/ thay cho /θ/.
5. Luyện tập âm /θ/ trên PTEUNI
Để phát âm /θ/ rõ hơn, bạn nên kết hợp luyện nghe và luyện nói.
Trong Identify the Sound, hãy tập nhận ra /θ/ ở đầu, giữa và cuối từ. Sau đó, thử phân biệt:
- three – tree
- thin – sin
- teeth – teethe
Khi đã nhận diện tốt hơn, chuyển sang Practice the Sound để nghe mẫu, tự phát âm và kiểm tra vị trí lưỡi, luồng hơi cùng độ rung của dây thanh.
Bạn có thể luyện theo trình tự:
Nghe → Nhận diện → Phát âm → Kiểm tra → Luyện lại

How to Pronounce /θ/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /θ/ sound appears in many familiar words such as think, three, author, and teeth. However, Vietnamese learners often make several common mistakes:
First, they pronounce /θ/ as /t/, making three sound more like tree.
Second, they pronounce /θ/ as /s/ because the tongue is positioned too far away from the upper front teeth.
Third, they vibrate their vocal cords, making /θ/ sound more like /ð/.
In PTE Speaking, clear consonant pronunciation helps listeners recognize words more easily.
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Position your tongue and control the airflow to produce /θ/.
- Recognize words in which “th” is pronounced /θ/.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /θ/ on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /θ/ Sound
The /θ/ sound is a voiceless fricative consonant.
2. How to Produce the /θ/ Sound
You can practise /θ/ in three steps:
- Step 1: Bring the tip of your tongue close to the edges of your upper front teeth. The tip of your tongue may protrude slightly between your upper and lower teeth, but it does not need to extend very far.
- Step 2: Keep your tongue lightly touching or very close to the teeth, creating a narrow passage for the air to flow through. Do not bite down on your tongue.
- Step 3: Push the air steadily through the narrow passage to create continuous friction. Keep your vocal cords from vibrating.
Try saying:
/θ/ – /θ/ – /θ/
Then, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s expert teachers to clearly see the tongue-tip position and airflow used to produce /θ/.
3. Recognizing /θ/ from Spelling Patterns
The /θ/ sound is most commonly spelled “th”. It can appear in different positions within a word:
- At the beginning: think /θɪŋk/, three /θriː/, thick /θɪk/
- In the middle: author /ˈɔːθə(r)/, birthday /ˈbɜːθdeɪ/, healthy /ˈhelθi/
- At the end: bath /bɑːθ/, teeth /tiːθ/, earth /ɜːθ/
However, “th” does not always represent /θ/. For example, this /ðɪs/ contains /ð/, while thyme /taɪm/ begins with /t/.
4. Important Points to Remember About /θ/
1. Distinguishing /θ/ from /t/
/θ/ allows the air to flow continuously through the narrow passage between the tongue and the teeth. With /t/, the airflow is blocked and then released.
Practise these pairs:
- three /θriː/ – tree /triː/
- thin /θɪn/ – tin /tɪn/
If three sounds too much like tree, keep the tip of your tongue close to your front teeth and let the air flow from the beginning instead of blocking it and releasing it with a burst.
2. Distinguishing /θ/ from /s/
/θ/ is produced with the tip of the tongue close to the upper front teeth. When producing /s/, the tongue is positioned farther inside the mouth rather than between the teeth.
Compare:
- thin /θɪn/ – sin /sɪn/
- thick /θɪk/ – sick /sɪk/
Use a mirror while practising. If the tip of your tongue stays in the same position when saying both words, you may be pronouncing /θ/ as /s/.
3. Distinguishing /θ/ from /ð/
/θ/ and /ð/ are produced with similar tongue positions. The key difference is that /θ/ is voiceless, while /ð/ is voiced.
Place your hand on your throat and say:
- thigh /θaɪ/ – thy /ðaɪ/
- teeth /tiːθ/ – teethe /tiːð/
In the second word of each pair, you should feel more vibration when producing /ð/.
4. Keep /θ/ Clear at the End of a Word
In bath /bɑːθ/ and teeth /tiːθ/, /θ/ is the final sound. After pushing the air through the narrow passage between your tongue and teeth, finish the word without replacing /θ/ with /t/ or adding a vowel afterward.
You can practise slowly:
/θ/ → teeth /tiːθ/ → my teeth
Record yourself and listen carefully to the end of the word. If teeth ends with a short burst of air, you may be producing /t/ instead of /θ/.
5. Practising the /θ/ Sound on PTEUNI
To improve your /θ/ pronunciation, combine listening and speaking practice.
In Identify the Sound, practise recognizing /θ/ at the beginning, middle, and end of words. Then, try distinguishing:
- three – tree
- thin – sin
- teeth – teethe
Once you can identify the sound more confidently, move on to Practice the Sound to listen to the model pronunciation, produce the sound yourself, and check your tongue position, airflow, and vocal-cord vibration.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again
If you are a PTE Helper student, you can access PTEUNI → Skill Booster and practise /θ/ with Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound: PTEUNI
PTE Helper will continue to support you as you build a strong pronunciation foundation and prepare for the Speaking section of the PTE.
