/ɑː/ – /ɑː/ – /ɑː/
Sau đó luyện với:
car /kɑː(r)/ – park /pɑːk/ – heart /hɑːt/ – father /ˈfɑːðə(r)/
Tiếp theo, hãy quan sát video của giáo viên chuyên môn PTE Helper để nhìn rõ độ mở của hàm và vị trí lưỡi khi tạo /ɑː/.
3. Nhận diện âm /ɑː/ qua mặt chữ
Âm /ɑː/ có thể được biểu thị bằng nhiều cách viết:
- Chữ “a”: ask /ɑːsk/, after /ˈɑːftə(r)/, father /ˈfɑːðə(r)/, class /klɑːs/, dance /dɑːns/
- Cụm “ar”: car /kɑː(r)/, park /pɑːk/, start /stɑːt/, hard /hɑːd/, large /lɑːdʒ/
- Cụm “al”: calm /kɑːm/, palm /pɑːm/, half /hɑːf/
- Cụm “ear”: heart /hɑːt/, hearth /hɑːθ/
- car /kɑː/
- a car park /ə kɑː pɑːk/
Khi từ tiếp theo bắt đầu bằng nguyên âm, /r/ có thể xuất hiện để nối hai từ:
- car owner /kɑːr ˈəʊnə(r)/
Cách này cũng phù hợp với phần lớn giọng Anh–Úc. Trong các accent có phát âm /r/, chẳng hạn nhiều giọng Mỹ, /r/ trong car được đọc rõ hơn.
4. Một số từ có thể thay đổi theo accent
Oxford ghi:
- UK: ask /ɑːsk/
- US: ask /æsk/
Sự khác biệt tương tự có thể xuất hiện trong những từ như class, dance, after và aunt. Khi học theo hệ phiên âm UK trong bài viết này, bạn sẽ sử dụng /ɑː/. Tuy nhiên, cách đọc với /æ/ trong một số accent khác không nhất thiết là sai.
5. Không phải “a” hoặc “ar” lúc nào cũng tạo /ɑː/
So sánh:
/ɑː/ → park → park/pack → a large park → The car is parked near the garden.

How to Pronounce the /ɑː/ Sound Correctly and Easily
The /ɑː/ sound appears in many familiar words such as car, park, father, and heart. Vietnamese learners often make two main mistakes when pronouncing this vowel:
First, pronouncing /ɑː/ too briefly, which can make it sound closer to /ʌ/. As a result, cart /kɑːt/ may sound like cut /kʌt/.
Second, moving the tongue too far forward, which can make /ɑː/ sound closer to /æ/. This can make pairs such as cart – cat or calm – cam difficult to distinguish.
This article will help you practise /ɑː/ in three main ways:
- Adjust the jaw opening, tongue position, and lip shape correctly.
- Recognise the common spelling patterns that represent /ɑː/.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /ɑː/ through exercises in Skill Booster on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /ɑː/ Sound
/ɑː/ is a long, monophthongal, voiced vowel sound. The /ː/ symbol indicates that the vowel is long. However, producing /ɑː/ correctly is not simply a matter of making the sound longer. You also need to position your tongue correctly.
2. How to Produce the /ɑː/ Sound
You can practise producing /ɑː/ by following these steps:
- Step 1: Lower your jaw and open your mouth comfortably.
- Step 2: Lower your tongue and move the body of the tongue slightly toward the back of the mouth.
- Step 3: Keep your lips relaxed. Do not purse them or stretch them strongly to the sides.
- Step 4: Keep your vocal folds vibrating and produce /ɑː/ for a relatively long, steady duration.
Try saying:
/ɑː/ – /ɑː/ – /ɑː/
Then practise with:
car /kɑː(r)/ – park /pɑːk/ – heart /hɑːt/ – father /ˈfɑːðə(r)/
Next, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s expert teachers to clearly observe the jaw opening and tongue position used to produce /ɑː/.
3. Recognising the /ɑː/ Sound from Spelling
The /ɑː/ sound can be represented by several different spelling patterns:
- The letter “a”: ask /ɑːsk/, after /ˈɑːftə(r)/, father /ˈfɑːðə(r)/, class /klɑːs/, dance /dɑːns/
- The spelling “ar”: car /kɑː(r)/, park /pɑːk/, start /stɑːt/, hard /hɑːd/, large /lɑːdʒ/
- The spelling “al”: calm /kɑːm/, palm /pɑːm/, half /hɑːf/
- The spelling “ear”: heart /hɑːt/, hearth /hɑːθ/
- The spelling “au”: aunt /ɑːnt/
- Some less predictable spellings: clerk /klɑːk/, spa /spɑː/
As these examples show, /ɑː/ can occur at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a word. However, spelling can only help you predict the pronunciation. You should still check the IPA transcription of each individual word.
4. Important Notes About the /ɑː/ Sound
1. Distinguishing /ɑː/ from /ʌ/
/ɑː/ is longer and is produced with the tongue lower and further back than /ʌ/.
Practise these pairs:
- cart /kɑːt/ – cut /kʌt/
- heart /hɑːt/ – hut /hʌt/
- dark /dɑːk/ – duck /dʌk/
- barn /bɑːn/ – bun /bʌn/
Do not simply lengthen /ʌ/ to produce /ɑː/. The two sounds also differ in tongue position and overall vowel quality.
2. Distinguishing /ɑː/ from /æ/
/æ/ is a front vowel, while /ɑː/ is produced further back in the mouth.
Practise these pairs:
- cart /kɑːt/ – cat /kæt/
- calm /kɑːm/ – cam /kæm/
- palm /pɑːm/ – Pam /pæm/
- heart /hɑːt/ – hat /hæt/
If you move your tongue too far forward or shorten the vowel, /ɑː/ may sound closer to /æ/.
3. Understanding the “(r)” Symbol in UK Transcriptions
Oxford gives the pronunciation of car as:
car /kɑː(r)/
The (r) indicates that /r/ is not always pronounced in British English.
When the word stands alone or is followed by a consonant, the /r/ is generally not pronounced:
- car /kɑː/
- a car park /ə kɑː pɑːk/
When the following word begins with a vowel, /r/ may be pronounced to link the two words:
- car owner /kɑːr ˈəʊnə(r)/
This linking pattern is also common in Australian English. In rhotic accents, such as many varieties of American English, the /r/ in car is pronounced more clearly.
4. Some Words May Differ Across Accents
Oxford gives:
- UK: ask /ɑːsk/
- US: ask /æsk/
Similar differences can occur in words such as class, dance, after, and aunt. In this article, we follow the UK pronunciation system and use /ɑː/. However, pronunciation with /æ/ in some other accents is not necessarily incorrect.
5. “a” and “ar” Do Not Always Represent /ɑː/
Compare:
- father /ˈfɑːðə(r)/ but cat /kæt/
- park /pɑːk/ but carry /ˈkæri/
- hard /hɑːd/ but warm /wɔːm/
- car /kɑː(r)/ but care /keə(r)/
Therefore, you should not determine pronunciation based on spelling alone.
5. Practising the /ɑː/ Sound on PTEUNI
To make /ɑː/ clear and natural, you need to combine listening practice with pronunciation and mouth-position practice.
In Skill Booster on PTEUNI, the Identify the Sound activity helps you recognise /ɑː/ in different words and distinguish it from /ʌ/ and /æ/. Then, Practice the Sound allows you to listen to a model and practise producing the sound yourself.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Individual sound → Single word → Minimal pair → Phrase → Complete sentence
For example:
/ɑː/ → park → park/pack → a large park → The car is parked near the garden.
After each practice round, check yourself:
- Am I producing /ɑː/ for a sufficient length of time and keeping it steady?
- Is my tongue moving too far forward and making the sound closer to /æ/?
- Am I shortening the vowel and making it sound closer to /ʌ/?
- Am I pronouncing /r/ when it is not needed in words such as car or heart?
The sequence Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again can help you recognise and produce /ɑː/ more accurately.
