Cách Phát Âm /ð/ Đúng Và Dễ Nhớ Trong Tiếng Anh
Âm /ð/ xuất hiện trong nhiều từ quen thuộc như this, they, mother, weather. Tuy nhiên, người Việt thường mắc một số lỗi:
Thứ nhất, đọc /ð/ thành /d/, khiến they nghe gần giống day.
- Đầu từ: this /ðɪs/, they /ðeɪ/, those /ðəʊz/
- Giữa từ: mother /ˈmʌðə(r)/, brother /ˈbrʌðə(r)/, weather /ˈweðə(r)/
- Cuối từ: breathe /briːð/, teethe /tiːð/
Tuy nhiên, th không phải lúc nào cũng tạo ra /ð/. Chẳng hạn, thin /θɪn/ và through /θruː/ bắt đầu bằng /θ/. Vì vậy, hãy kiểm tra phiên âm khi gặp từ mới.
4. Một vài lưu ý quan trọng về âm /ð/
1. Phân biệt /ð/ và /d/
/ð/ cho hơi đi ra liên tục qua khe giữa lưỡi và răng. Với /d/, luồng hơi bị chặn rồi mới bật ra.
Hãy luyện:
- they /ðeɪ/ – day /deɪ/
- then /ðen/ – den /den/
Nếu they nghe gần giống day, hãy kiểm tra xem bạn có đang chặn hơi ở đầu từ không.
2. Phân biệt /ð/ và /θ/
/ð/ và /θ/ có vị trí lưỡi gần giống nhau. Điểm khác biệt chính là /ð/ làm rung dây thanh, còn /θ/ không làm rung dây thanh.
Hãy đặt tay lên cổ và đọc:
- thy /ðaɪ/ – thigh /θaɪ/
- they – day
- thy – thigh
- teethe – teeth
Khi đã nhận diện tốt hơn, chuyển sang Practice the Sound để nghe mẫu, tự phát âm và kiểm tra vị trí lưỡi, luồng hơi cùng độ rung của dây thanh.
Bạn có thể luyện theo trình tự:
Nghe → Nhận diện → Phát âm → Kiểm tra → Luyện lại

How to Pronounce /ð/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /ð/ sound appears in many familiar words, such as this, they, mother, and weather. However, Vietnamese learners often make a few common mistakes:
First, they pronounce /ð/ as /d/, making they sound similar to day.
Second, they do not vibrate their vocal cords, making /ð/ sound more like /θ/.
Third, they position their tongues too far back in their mouths, making the sound unclear and more likely to be replaced by another consonant.
In PTE Speaking, clear consonant pronunciation helps listeners recognise words more easily.
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Position your tongue, control airflow, and vibrate your vocal cords to produce /ð/.
- Recognise words in which th is pronounced /ð/.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /ð/ on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /ð/ Sound
/ð/ is a voiced fricative consonant.
2. How to Produce /ð/
You can practise /ð/ in three steps:
- Step 1: Bring the tip of your tongue close to the edges of your upper front teeth. Your tongue tip may extend slightly between your upper and lower teeth.
- Step 2: Keep your tongue lightly touching or very close to your teeth, allowing air to pass through. Do not bite down firmly on your tongue or block the airflow completely.
- Step 3: Let the air flow out steadily while vibrating your vocal cords. Place your hand on your throat to feel the vibration as you pronounce the sound.
Try saying:
/ð/ – /ð/ – /ð/
Then watch the pronunciation tutorial by a PTE Helper teacher to see the tongue-tip position and how to produce /ð/.
3. Recognising /ð/ Through Spelling
/ð/ is usually represented by “th”. It can occur in different positions within a word:
- At the beginning: this /ðɪs/, they /ðeɪ/, those /ðəʊz/
- In the middle: mother /ˈmʌðə(r)/, brother /ˈbrʌðə(r)/, weather /ˈweðə(r)/
- At the end: breathe /briːð/, teethe /tiːð/
However, th does not always represent /ð/. For example, thin /θɪn/ and through /θruː/ begin with /θ/. Therefore, check the phonetic transcription whenever you encounter a new word.
4. Important Points to Remember About /ð/
1. Distinguishing /ð/ from /d/
For /ð/, air flows continuously through the narrow gap between your tongue and teeth. For /d/, the airflow is blocked and then released.
Practise:
- they /ðeɪ/ – day /deɪ/
- then /ðen/ – den /den/
If your they sounds similar to day, check whether you are blocking the airflow at the beginning of the word.
2. Distinguishing /ð/ from /θ/
/ð/ and /θ/ use similar tongue positions. The main difference is that your vocal cords vibrate for /ð/, whereas they do not vibrate for /θ/.
Place your hand on your throat and say:
- thy /ðaɪ/ – thigh /θaɪ/
- teethe /tiːð/ – teeth /tiːθ/
If you cannot feel any vibration during the final sound in teethe, try using gentler airflow and keeping your vocal cords vibrating as you produce /ð/.
3. Do Not Pronounce Every “th” the Same Way
Both words contain th, but this /ðɪs/ begins with /ð/, while think /θɪŋk/ begins with /θ/.
When practising, learn each word alongside its phonetic transcription and an audio model. Do not decide how to pronounce a word simply by looking at the letters th.
4. Keep /ð/ Clear at the End of a Word
In breathe /briːð/ and teethe /tiːð/, /ð/ is the final sound. Keep your tongue close to your teeth and maintain the vibration as you finish the word. Do not replace the final sound with /d/ or add a vowel after it.
You can practise slowly:
/ð/ → breathe /briːð/ → breathe slowly
Also note that breath /breθ/ and breathe /briːð/ differ in both their vowel sounds and their final consonants. Listen to the model pronunciation and practise each word separately before comparing them side by side.
5. Practising /ð/ on PTEUNI
To pronounce /ð/ more clearly, combine listening practice with speaking practice.
In Identify the Sound, practise recognising /ð/ at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of words. Then try distinguishing between:
- they – day
- thy – thigh
- teethe – teeth
Once you can recognise the sound more confidently, move on to Practice the Sound to listen to the model pronunciation, produce the sound yourself, and check your tongue position, airflow, and vocal cord vibration.
Follow this practice sequence:
Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Repeat
If you are a PTE Helper student, go to PTEUNI → Skill Booster and practise /ð/ using Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound:
Regular practice will help you produce /ð/ more clearly and distinguish it from /d/ and /θ/. PTE Helper will continue to support you as you build your pronunciation foundation and prepare for the Speaking section of PTE.
