/e/ – /e/ – /e/
Sau đó luyện với các từ:
egg /eɡ/ – ten /ten/ – bed /bed/ – head /hed/
Tiếp theo, hãy quan sát video của giáo viên chuyên môn PTE Helper để nhìn rõ độ mở của hàm và vị trí lưỡi khi tạo âm /e/.
3. Nhận diện âm /e/ qua mặt chữ
Âm /e/ có thể được biểu thị bằng nhiều cách viết khác nhau:
- Chữ “e”: egg /eɡ/, end /end/, bed /bed/, ten /ten/, help /help/, lesson /ˈlesn/, enter /ˈentə(r)/
- Cụm “ea”: head /hed/, bread /bred/, ready /ˈredi/, weather /ˈweðə(r)/
- Cụm “ai” hoặc “ay”: said /sed/, says /sez/
- Cụm “ie”: friend /frend/
- Chữ “a”: many /ˈmeni/, any /ˈeni/
4. Một vài lưu ý quan trọng về âm /e/
1. Phân biệt /e/ và /æ/
/e/ và /æ/ đều là nguyên âm trước, nhưng /æ/ có chất âm mở hơn.
Hãy luyện các cặp:
- pen /pen/ – pan /pæn/
- bed /bed/ – bad /bæd/
- men /men/ – man /mæn/
- said /sed/ – sad /sæd/
So sánh:
- men /men/ – main /meɪn/
- sell /sel/ – sale /seɪl/
- test /test/ – taste /teɪst/
- west /west/ – waste /weɪst/
Khi phát âm /e/, hãy giữ âm ổn định và kết thúc ngay, không trượt sang /ɪ/.
4. Không đoán cách phát âm chỉ từ chữ “e” hoặc “ea”
Chữ e không phải lúc nào cũng được đọc là /e/. Ví dụ, me /miː/ có âm /iː/, còn pretty /ˈprɪti/ có âm /ɪ/.
/e/ → bed → bed/bad → ten red pens → Ben left ten red pens on the desk.

How to Pronounce /e/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /e/ sound appears in many familiar English words such as egg, bed, head, and ten. However, Vietnamese speakers often make three common mistakes when pronouncing this vowel:
First, opening the mouth too widely, causing /e/ to sound more like /æ/. As a result, pen may sound like pan, while bed can sound closer to bad.
Second, raising the tongue too high, causing /e/ to sound more like /ɪ/. This can make pairs such as set – sit or left – lift difficult to distinguish.
Third, lengthening the sound or changing the mouth shape partway through, causing /e/ to become /eɪ/. For example, men may sound similar to main.
In PTE Speaking, clear vowel pronunciation helps words be recognized accurately and makes your speech easier to understand.
This article will help you practise /e/ in three main areas:
- Producing the /e/ sound correctly: Adjusting your jaw opening, tongue position, and lip shape.
- Recognizing /e/ in words: Becoming familiar with the spelling patterns that commonly represent this sound.
- Putting the sound into practice: Practising listening and pronunciation through Skill Booster exercises on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /e/ Sound
/e/ is a short, simple, voiced vowel. When you pronounce it, air flows relatively freely through the mouth without being blocked by the lips or tongue.
2. How to Produce the /e/ Sound
You can practise pronouncing /e/ by following these steps:
- Step 1: Lower your jaw slightly. Your mouth should be more open than when pronouncing /ɪ/, but not as open as for /æ/.
- Step 2: Raise the front part of your tongue toward the front of the mouth. The tongue should not touch your teeth or the roof of your mouth.
- Step 3: Keep your lips relaxed or slightly spread to the sides. Do not round your lips.
- Step 4: Pronounce the sound briefly and keep your mouth position stable. Do not let the sound move toward /ɪ/ as it does in /eɪ/.
Try saying:
/e/ – /e/ – /e/
Then practise with these words:
egg /eɡ/ – ten /ten/ – bed /bed/ – head /hed/
Next, watch the pronunciation video from PTE Helper’s specialist teachers to clearly see the jaw opening and tongue position used to produce /e/.
3. Recognizing the /e/ Sound from Spelling
The /e/ sound can be represented by several different spelling patterns:
- The letter “e”: egg /eɡ/, end /end/, bed /bed/, ten /ten/, help /help/, lesson /ˈlesn/, enter /ˈentə(r)/
- The spelling “ea”: head /hed/, bread /bred/, ready /ˈredi/, weather /ˈweðə(r)/
- The spelling “ai” or “ay”: said /sed/, says /sez/
- The spelling “ie”: friend /frend/
- The letter “a”: many /ˈmeni/, any /ˈeni/
- Some less common spelling patterns: bury /ˈberi/, leopard /ˈlepəd/
In terms of position, /e/ can occur at the beginning of a word, as in egg and end, but it is more commonly found in the middle of words, as in bed, ready, lesson, and friend. The /e/ sound does not occur at the end of common English words.
These spelling patterns can help you predict pronunciation, but they are not absolute rules. The same spelling can represent a different sound in other words.
4. Important Points to Remember About the /e/ Sound
1. Distinguishing /e/ from /æ/
Both /e/ and /æ/ are front vowels, but /æ/ has a more open quality.
Practise these pairs:
- pen /pen/ – pan /pæn/
- bed /bed/ – bad /bæd/
- men /men/ – man /mæn/
- said /sed/ – sad /sæd/
When practising, check that pen and bed are not being pronounced with the mouth too open, making them sound like pan and bad.
2. Distinguishing /e/ from /ɪ/
/ɪ/ has a higher and more close vowel quality than /e/. If you raise your tongue too high, the two sounds may become difficult to distinguish.
Practise:
- set /set/ – sit /sɪt/
- left /left/ – lift /lɪft/
- fell /fel/ – fill /fɪl/
- medal /ˈmedl/ – middle /ˈmɪdl/
Do not rely only on vowel length, because vowel duration can also vary depending on stress and context. Instead, focus on the difference in vowel quality.
3. Do Not Turn /e/ into /eɪ/
/e/ is a monophthong, while /eɪ/ is a diphthong in which the mouth position changes as the sound is produced.
Compare:
- men /men/ – main /meɪn/
- sell /sel/ – sale /seɪl/
- test /test/ – taste /teɪst/
- west /west/ – waste /weɪst/
When pronouncing /e/, keep the sound steady and finish it without gliding toward /ɪ/.
4. Do Not Guess the Pronunciation from the Letters “e” or “ea” Alone
The letter e is not always pronounced as /e/. For example, me /miː/ contains /iː/, while pretty /ˈprɪti/ contains /ɪ/.
Similarly, the spelling ea is pronounced /e/ in head /hed/, but it represents /iː/ in sea /siː/ and /eɪ/ in break /breɪk/.
Therefore, when learning a new word, check its phonetic transcription and listen to the audio instead of relying only on its spelling.
5. Practising the /e/ Sound on PTEUNI
To use /e/ naturally, you need to combine listening practice with pronunciation practice. In Skill Booster on PTEUNI, the Identify the Sound exercise helps you recognize /e/ in different words and distinguish it from /æ/, /ɪ/, and /eɪ/.
You can then move on to Practice the Sound to listen to a model pronunciation and repeat the sound yourself.
Gradually increase the difficulty in this order:
Individual sound → Single word → Easily confused sound pairs → Phrases → Complete sentences
For example:
/e/ → bed → bed/bad → ten red pens → Ben left ten red pens on the desk.
After each practice session, check yourself:
- Is the /e/ sound too open and becoming closer to /æ/?
- Is the sound too close and becoming similar to /ɪ/?
- Am I lengthening the sound or turning it into /eɪ/?
- Is the vowel in the stressed syllable clear enough?
The sequence Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again can help you improve both your ability to distinguish sounds by ear and your control of mouth positioning.
