/l/ – /l/ – /l/
look – like – long
- “l”: look /lʊk/, like /laɪk/, long /lɒŋ/, milk /mɪlk/
- “ll”: yellow /ˈjeləʊ/, tell /tel/, ball /bɔːl/
- light /laɪt/ – right /raɪt/
- lock /lɒk/ – rock /rɒk/
Nếu light nghe gần giống right, hãy kiểm tra xem đầu lưỡi đã chạm đúng vị trí khi bắt đầu từ chưa.
2. Đừng bỏ /l/ ở cuối từ
Ở cuối từ, /l/ có thể nghe khác với /l/ ở đầu từ, nhưng âm này vẫn cần được thể hiện.
So sánh:
- feel /fiːl/ – fee /fiː/
- all /ɔːl/ – awe /ɔː/
Khi đọc feel, hãy giữ tiếng nói, đưa đầu lưỡi lên vị trí của /l/ rồi kết thúc từ. Đừng dừng ngay ở nguyên âm /iː/.
3. Phân biệt âm /l/ với chữ “l”
Bài viết sử dụng phiên âm UK theo Oxford. Khi học từ mới, hãy dựa vào phiên âm thay vì chỉ nhìn mặt chữ: lamb /læm/ có /l/ ở đầu từ, còn calm /kɑːm/ có chữ “l” nhưng không phát âm /l/.
5. Luyện tập âm /l/ trên PTEUNI
Để phát âm /l/ rõ hơn, bạn nên kết hợp luyện nghe và luyện nói.
Trong Identify the Sound, hãy tập nhận ra /l/ ở đầu và cuối từ. Sau đó, thử phân biệt:
- light – right
- feel – fee
Khi đã nhận diện tốt hơn, chuyển sang Practice the Sound để nghe mẫu, tự phát âm và kiểm tra xem đầu lưỡi đã chạm đúng vị trí chưa, đặc biệt khi /l/ đứng ở cuối từ.
Bạn có thể luyện theo trình tự:
Nghe → Nhận diện → Phát âm → Kiểm tra → Luyện lại

How to Pronounce /l/ Correctly and Easily Remember It
The /l/ sound appears in many familiar words, such as look, like, milk, and feel. However, Vietnamese learners often make a few common mistakes:
First, not placing the tip of the tongue in the correct position, which makes /l/ sound more like /r/ or /w/.
Second, leaving out /l/ at the end of words, for example, pronouncing feel as fee.
In PTE Speaking, pronouncing consonants clearly at the beginning and end of words helps listeners recognise words more easily.
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Position your tongue and control airflow to produce /l/.
- Recognise /l/ in different positions within words.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /l/ on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /l/ Sound
/l/ is a voiced consonant.
In the British English pronunciation used in this article, /l/ at the beginning of a syllable usually has a clearer quality, as in look. At the end of a syllable, /l/ usually has a darker quality, as in feel. These are two forms of the same /l/ sound, and both are written as /l/ in standard phonemic transcriptions.
2. How to Produce /l/
You can practise /l/ in three steps:
- Step 1: Open your mouth slightly and naturally, keeping your lips relaxed.
- Step 2: Gently place the tip of your tongue against the ridge just behind your upper teeth.
- Step 3: Vibrate your vocal cords and allow air to flow around the sides of your tongue. Then move directly into the following vowel, for example, /l/ + /ʊ/ at the beginning of look.
Try saying:
/l/ – /l/ – /l/
look – like – long
You can place your hand on your throat while pronouncing the sound to feel your vocal cords vibrating. Avoid pressing your entire tongue against the roof of your mouth, as the air needs room to escape around the sides.
Then watch the instructional video by a PTE Helper teacher to see where to place the tip of your tongue when producing /l/.
3. Recognising /l/ Through Spelling
The /l/ sound can appear at the beginning of a word, as in look /lʊk/, in the middle, as in yellow /ˈjeləʊ/, or at the end, as in feel /fiːl/. In words such as milk /mɪlk/, you still need to pronounce /l/ before moving on to /k/.
Common spelling patterns that represent /l/ include:
- “l”: look /lʊk/, like /laɪk/, long /lɒŋ/, milk /mɪlk/
- “ll”: yellow /ˈjeləʊ/, tell /tel/, ball /bɔːl/
However, the letter “l” is not always pronounced. For example, calm is pronounced /kɑːm/: the spelling contains “l”, but there is no /l/ sound in the phonetic transcription. Therefore, check the transcription whenever you encounter a new word.
4. A Few Important Points About /l/
1. Distinguishing /l/ from /r/
To produce /l/, the tip of your tongue needs to touch the ridge behind your upper teeth. For the English /r/ sound, the tip of your tongue does not make this contact.
Practise these pairs:
- light /laɪt/ – right /raɪt/
- lock /lɒk/ – rock /rɒk/
If light sounds more like right, check whether the tip of your tongue is touching the correct position at the beginning of the word.
2. Do Not Leave Out /l/ at the End of Words
At the end of a word, /l/ may sound different from /l/ at the beginning, but it still needs to be pronounced.
Compare:
- feel /fiːl/ – fee /fiː/
- all /ɔːl/ – awe /ɔː/
When saying feel, maintain your voicing, raise the tip of your tongue into position for /l/, and then finish the word. Avoid stopping at the vowel /iː/.
3. Distinguishing the /l/ Sound from the Letter “l”
This article uses Oxford’s British English phonetic transcriptions. When learning a new word, follow its transcription rather than relying only on its spelling: lamb /læm/ has /l/ at the beginning, while calm /kɑːm/ contains the letter “l” but has no /l/ sound.
5. Practising /l/ on PTEUNI
To pronounce /l/ more clearly, combine listening practice with speaking practice.
In Identify the Sound, practise recognising /l/ at the beginning and end of words. Then try distinguishing:
- light – right
- feel – fee
Once you can recognise the sound more easily, move on to Practice the Sound to listen to model pronunciations, practise producing the sound yourself, and check whether the tip of your tongue is touching the correct position, especially when /l/ appears at the end of a word.
You can follow this practice sequence:
Listen → Identify → Pronounce → Check → Practise Again
If you are a PTE Helper student, you can access PTEUNI → Skill Booster and practise /l/ with Identify the Sound and Practice the Sound:
PTE Helper will continue to support you as you build a strong foundation in pronunciation and prepare for the Speaking component of PTE.
