Ví dụ two (số 2) có thể bị nghe thành do (làm).
- Đầu từ: to, ten, try, top, talk, tell, tree, time, table, terrible
- Giữa từ: until, after, empty, attend, return, winter, between, contain, printing
- Cuối từ: it, but, ate, boat, went, late, light, state, fruit, apart

A Beginner-Friendly Guide to Pronouncing /t/ in English
The /t/ sound appears very frequently in English, but even a small pronunciation mistake can make a word sound like a completely different word. Here are three of the most common mistakes Vietnamese learners make:
First, pronouncing /t/ as /d/ because the /t/ is produced too lightly or without enough airflow. Since /t/ is a voiceless sound, it is produced without vocal cord vibration and, in certain positions, with a noticeable burst of air. If the sound is not clear enough, for example, two (the number 2) may be heard as do.
Second, adding an extra /s/ sound and turning /t/ into /ts/. For example, tune may be pronounced incorrectly as something like tsune.*
Third, pronouncing /t/ as /tʃ/ (the “ch” sound). For example, tease may be heard as cheese.*
Another very common mistake is omitting or weakening the final /t/ in words such as cat, sit, right, and late, making the words less clear and more difficult for listeners to recognise.
This is especially important when preparing for PTE Speaking, where accurate and clear pronunciation is an important factor in achieving a higher score.
Therefore, in this article, PTE Helper will help you:
- Remember how to pronounce /t/: Learn the correct tongue position and airflow through clear explanations and a video demonstration, making the sound easier to understand and remember.
- Recognise /t/ through spelling: Learn the common spelling patterns that produce /t/ and identify the sound at the beginning, middle, and end of words.
- Practise listening to and pronouncing /t/ through the Skill Booster pronunciation platform on PTEUNI.
1. Introduction to the /t/ sound
/t/ is a voiceless consonant and belongs to the group of sounds known as plosives. When producing /t/, the vocal cords do not vibrate. The airflow is briefly blocked and then released.
2. How to produce the /t/ sound
To produce /t/, follow these steps:
- Step 1: Place the tip of your tongue against the alveolar ridge just behind your upper front teeth. Your tongue should touch the gum ridge, not the teeth.
- Step 2: Block the airflow briefly.
- Step 3: Release your tongue quickly so that the air can burst out.
Now, follow PTE Helper’s pronunciation instructor in the video below to learn how to produce the /t/ sound correctly.
3. Recognising the /t/ sound through spelling
In English, the /t/ sound is commonly represented by the letter “t” and can appear at the beginning, middle, or end of a word.
The letter “t” is commonly pronounced /t/, for example:
- At the beginning of words: to, ten, try, top, talk, tell, tree, time, table, terrible
- In the middle of words: until, after, empty, attend, return, winter, between, contain, printing
- At the end of words: it, but, ate, boat, went, late, light, state, fruit, apart
The “-ed” ending of regular past-tense verbs can also be pronounced /t/ when it follows a voiceless consonant, for example: stopped, looked, kissed, washed.
4. A few important notes about the /t/ sound
The /t/ sound is not always pronounced with the same degree of aspiration. There are two common situations in which /t/ is not strongly aspirated:
- When /t/ occurs between two vowels in certain environments, as in water, butter, and city. In American English, this /t/ is often pronounced more lightly and may sound similar to a quick /d/.
- When /t/ comes after /s/, as in stop, stay, and stick. In these words, /t/ is produced without the strong burst of air normally heard in an aspirated /t/.
